Getting Started - Tips for Parents

Begin Teaching and Reinforcing Desired Behavior and Character Traits

  • Choose whether you want a weekly chart or daily chart

  • Choose a design that will motivate your child

  • Add the desired behaviors that you would like your child to exhibit

  • Talk with your child and explain what is expected

  • Observe your child demonstrating the behaviors.

  • Praise them and give them recognition on the chart

How to Talk with Your Child

Before starting, talk with your children and explain what is expected of them.   Let them know that every time you see them displaying the character traits listed on the chart, you will update the chart.

Be sure you make an effort to observe your child demonstrating the character traits listed on the chart.   Praise your child as you mark their chart,  “Connor – I love how you listened when I asked you to pick up your toys” or “Sophie – I’m updating the chart because you had self-control and didn't have a tantrum.

It is important to sit down with your child at the end of the day to go over the chart.  Praise them for the things they did well and encourage them to improve in areas where they need help.

Incentives

For some kids, the chart and praise will be enough of a motivator.  Others may need incentives, and we provide a list of simple ideas such as extra play time or extra outside time.
