How to Talk with Your Child and Reinforce Good Character with the Chart
Children need to exhibit character.  The Character Charts give you a fun way to modify and reinforce character building traits with your children.   Before starting, talk with your children and explain what is expected of them.   Let them know that every time you see them displaying the character traits listed on their chart, they will get a tally on their chart.  (Options other than tallies can be symbols such as stars, plus signs, a sport’s team symbol, numbers, or the child’s initials.)   For example, if you catch them smiling and having a positive attitude about doing chores, then you add a mark.  If you are using the digital version, then you can update the chart using your keyboard.

Character trait expectations can be added to the chart depending on what traits you want to focus on. We provide a listing of character trait expectations to choose from if you wish.   Be sure you make an effort to observe your child demonstrating the character traits.   Each time you update the chart, you should praise your child.  “Sophie – I’m updating the chart because you did what I asked with a positive attitude.”

For some kids, the chart and praise will be enough of a motivator.  If you do want to provide additional incentives, we provide a list of simple ideas such as extra play time or extra outside time.

It is important to sit down with your child at the end of the day to go over the chart.  Praise them for the things they did well and encourage them to improve in areas where they need help.

Charts can be used over and over, and all you have to do is change the expectations.  Begin reinforcing character now because your child's future is important!
